White fillings

What are Dental White Fillings?

White or tooth-coloured fillings are made from dental composite and they can be shaded to match your original tooth colour and provide a more natural lifelike alternative to traditional silver amalgam fillings. White fillings also ensure your natural tooth can be saved as they are a minimally invasive restoration.

These types of fillings can be used either in the front or at the back of the mouth. They provide a natural look to restore the function and strength of damaged teeth. At our Richmond practice our team of dentists use fillings most commonly for cavities that have occurred due to tooth decay. However this composite filling can be utilised for building up chipped or cracked teeth, reshaping uneven teeth or closing the gaps between teeth. Why do I need a Filling?

Fillings are used to fill in cavities that develop at the outer surface of the tooth. It is imperative to fill those holes to protect the tooth from further damage and decay and lessen the risk of a bacterial infection that can spread to others parts of the tooth. Once enamel is weakened, the risk of tooth decay is increased and a filling will help to keep your tooth healthy.

What are the benefits of white fillings?

  • A natural lifelike end result when compared to metallic or amalgam fillings. Amalgam fillings can also be prone to blackening over time
  • White fillings do not contain mercury like the metallic ones, which many people view as a healthier option
  • White fillings actually strengthen the tooth, helping to stabilize
  • White fillings set immediately making it a convenient treatment with swift results

White Fillings for Buccal Recession

White fillings can also be utilised to treat buccal recession, which is the exposure of the outside part of the tooth root. This loss of gum may lead to sensitivity, poor aesthetics or a worry about losing the tooth.

White Fillings for Posterior Composites

Traditionally, white fillings have always been considered less long-lasting than silver amalgam fillings. More recently new materials are available that are comparable to silver amalgam, and are proving to have the similar long-lasting durability as amalgam. The life expectancy of a white filling can depend greatly on where it is in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite. When replacing large fillings, we would recommend ceramic inlays or crowns.

How long will these fillings last?

This is very much dependant on your oral hygiene, we always recommend you attend regular check ups and Hygiene visits to ensure the promotion of a preventive approach. However with proper care, white fillings usually last for 5-10 years before they need to be replaced

Will I suffer from pain after the treatment?

Your tooth will remain sensitive to heat and cold for around 2 days after the treatment. Any pain will be mild and you will be able to resume your normal activities within three days.
