Composite veneers are extremely versatile and quick, frequently a same day treatment that can work cosmetic wonders to bring that confidence back to your smile. The perfect solution for emergency chips and breaks but moreover for life’s big occasions, such as weddings, where you require a rapid smile makeover. Our expert team of dentists have years of experience working with composite to expertly sculpt the smile of your dreams.

However if you are seeking the ultimate smile makeover with the most lifelike results, porcelain veneers are the definitive choice. Our team of Dentists work with the best expert ceramists and latest digital smile technology to meticulously select the desired shape and shade of the veneers, ensuring the smile of your dreams becomes a dazzling reality.

What are veneers and how do they work?

Composite veneers also known as bonding or same day veneers comprises of placing a white filling material over the natural tooth surface. This material is matched with your natural tooth shade and is then applied in layers and sculpted to achieve the desired aesthetic. It is used by dentists worldwide, most commonly to fix chipped teeth.

A Porcelain veneer is an extremely thin layer of porcelain that is attached to the enamel surface of teeth for ultimate strength. Think of it similar to a bonded fingernail on a finger. They can correct a plethora of cosmetic concerns by masking discolorations or cracks.

Why choose veneers and what are the advantages?

Instant composite veneers are a very popular treatment partly due to the quick results as it can be carried out in one session. There is also minimal pain or discomfort and they can also rectify many common cosmetic concerns.

Porcelain veneers have unrivalled longevity and deliver natural results due to the translucency and lustre which carefully mimics enamel. One of the many benefits of porcelain veneers is their ability to provide immediate results that might otherwise take many months or years with traditional orthodontics. Other benefits include making all of your teeth the same length, realignment of your bite, stabilizing cracked or broken teeth, strengthening weak or loose teeth.

What can veneers fix?

Alongside being commonly used for chipped or broken teeth, composite veneers can correct a wide variety of cosmetic concerns that are causing you to be self conscious about your smile. This includes uneven smile lines, crooked or crowded teeth, gaps, small teeth or utilising the composite to protect and whiten the surface colour.

If you currently have missing, broken or worn down teeth, then a full mouth reconstruction may be required. Sometimes we grind or wear down all our teeth, so in these cases we need to rebuild all the teeth to their original lengths. Using composite bonding techniques, we can restore your smile.

Composite veneers are also a great treatment solution for White spots. White spots are caused by the loss of mineral content from the enamel of the teeth. As well as being a cosmetic concern for many people, this problem can result in the deterioration of teeth. Here are a series of photos showing effective treatment for white spots.

Peg lateral

Composite Veneers are also a great solution for small lateral teeth, commonly called Peg laterals. The aim of this treatment is to give this lateral peg tooth a normal looking crown structure. Usually sufficient space exists between the central and canine to allow restoration.

Porcelain veneers can also correct many common cosmetic complaints such as small teeth, teeth of differing lengths, gaps, misaligned or crowded teeth, cracked or broken teeth, and tooth discolouration such as heavy staining. Modern teeth whitening techniques can remove most of the stains in the teeth but some forms of tooth discoloration that run deeper cannot be corrected with teeth whitening procedures.

Caring for your veneers

How do I look after my veneers?

They require no additional maintenance as long as you have a good dental hygiene routine established. This should include flossing, good gum health alongside regular hygiene appointments.

How long do veneers last?

This depends on many factors including diet, lifestyle and aftercare. Habits such as consumption of fizzy drinks, smoking or teeth grinding can significantly reduce the lifespan. Nevertheless typically composite veneers can last between 3 – 5 years at which point they will need to be polished or replaced. However porcelain veneers generally last between 8-15 years although many will last beyond 20 years and provide the most natural long lasting results.

How much do veneers cost?

The cost is bespoke to each patient dependant on their exacting requirements and number of teeth being treated. Veneers may also be combined with whitening, crowns and other cosmetic procedures dependant on the desired outcome. Nevertheless composite veneers are typically less expensive than porcelain veneers. Composite quality also varies greatly due to the material used, we ensure we only use the highest quality materials to ensure stable and high end aesthetic results. At Gardens dental you will provided with a detailed treatment plan and full costs in advance.

Composite veneers vs porcelain veneers. What are the disadvantages?

Composite veneers are a great treatment choice to address a number of cosmetic concerns, especially if you are seeking a swift and cost effective solution. Our SmileFast service can provide dramatic smile makeovers combining orthodontics, composite and ceramics. Modern techniques have also improved polishing of composite to give more shine. However Porcelain veneers provide the ultimate smile makeover due to their unrivalled lifelike lustre. They will also not be prone to staining like composite and the lifespan is 8 to 15 years versus just 3 to 5 years for composite.

Will veneers affect my bite?

Many people worry that if they put veneers on their front teeth they may no longer bite and eat normally. This is not true. Front teeth with veneers continue to perform the same function with the same end result as before. Composite is simply coating the tooth and involves little preparation, so again does not impact your bite. However lifespan can be impacted by extreme stress on the tooth such as opening a bottle using your teeth

What preparation do veneers require? Will my teeth be filed down?

Composite veneers require very little tooth preparation as the composite resin is applied and sculpted directly on your natural tooth or teeth. Teeth are rarely reducing with filing.

Many people would like veneers but don’t want their teeth prepared. Porcelain veneers require minimal tooth preparation, aiming to conserve as much tooth as possible. As a general guide, between 0.5mm – 0.7mm of the tooth is adjusted to give room for the veneer to fit to the tooth surface. Tooth preparation depends on how the teeth are originally positioned. Sometimes teeth need no preparation and at other times more to correctly shape the teeth. After the preparation a mould is taken and temporary veneers are made. You then return approximately 2 weeks later to have the Porcelain veneers bonded to your teeth.

How long will the entire treatment take?

After an initial consultation to discuss suitability and your desired outcome, composite veneers are very much instant, as they are a same day treatment. Our SmileFast service which uses composite veneers for a complete smile makeover can also be completed in hours, although there will be more appointments due to the requirement for the digital imaging and laboratory work.

For porcelain veneers an initial consultation will be needed to establish the viability of porcelain veneers for your smile makeover. After this you will be provided a treatment plan and full costs. From approval of this, the process will typically take around 3 to 4 weeks, from the first mould of your teeth to finished veneers.

Can you use veneers on crowns or for missing teeth?

Veneers are placed only on natural teeth. They cannot be put on crowns or in the absence of real teeth.

Will it cause pain? How invasive is the treatment?

Due to the minimal tooth preparation and the use of local anesthetic it is a relatively swift treatment with minimal pain or discomfort. Composite Veneers are an especially great option for those who want a cosmetic change but are of a naturally more nervous disposition.
